Tottenham Hotspur plotting move for Manchester United outcast Chris Smalling – report

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a potential bid for Manchester United outcast Chris Smalling after losing out on Hull City’s Harry Maguire, according to reports.

Smalling, who struggled to hold down a spot in the starting XI last season, has been rendered surplus to requirements at Old Trafford following the capture of Victor Lindelof.

The Englishman has already attracted to attention of Everton, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Arsenal since being told he has to leave this summer.

And according to the Mail Online‘s Joe Bernstein, Mauricio Pochettino could turn his attention to Smalling as he looks for a centre half to share the load with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld next season.

I find it amazing that, following the 27-year-old’s display at White Hart Lane last month, Pochettino is now actually considering adding him to the Spurs roster.

Then again, he does fit the Argentine’s criteria for when it comes to picking centre back: physically imposing, aggressive, preferably with Premier League experience and an aptitude for covering ground quickly. He would also be familiar with playing alongside fellow England teammates Harry Kane, Kyle Walker and Eric Dier.

Smalling, above anything, needs a fresh start – not that he has much of a choice – and there aren’t many better defensive guides and disciplinarians to work under than Pochettino.
