Anthony Martial jokes about Marcus Rashford being Manchester United’s new captain

Marcus Rashford is enjoying some much deserved time away from it all, but that didn’t stop Anthony Martial from poking some fun at his latest post.

The 19-year-old, ever since being thrown into the first team back in February 2016, has made 71 appearances with the first team alongside featuring at Euro 2016.

A holiday is very much deserved, and the youngster was pictured with a joyous expression on a boat, bombing along the idllic waters of some warm foreign sea (probably the Mediterranean).

Martial, who was in Mauritius earlier this month, couldn’t resist joking about his teammate’s newly discovered nautical prowess, conjuring up an image of Rashford as captain of a much bigger vessel in Manchester United.

If my memory serves me correctly, this could be a reference to a photo the Frenchman posted – which is now gone, along with all his other Instagram posts for some reason, save for a picture of some shoes – last summer, which sported the image of Martial driving a boat through some serene waters, with the caption “Captain Martial”.

It’s a shame that photo is now gone, because he really looked the part. Straight face, commanding glare, looking onwards into the unknown.

The idea of Rashford as United captain may come across as strange at this given time; he is a notoriously humble, quiet character, but his presence in this team has grown over the last year and, as seen with how he dealt with John Guidetti (“Sssshhh – are you the ref?”) last season, will throw his weight around and make himself heard if needed.

Supporters will be keen to see how Captain Marcus continues to develop during a season that could see him assert himself as a truly indispensable asset under Mourinho.
