The Gunners have expressed an interest in signing the Frenchman, who took Ligue 1 by storm last season, and will have to shell out way over £100m to secure his services.
Martial struggled to replicate the brilliance of his first season in England last term, prompting reports of unrest until the 21-year-old confirmed he was committed to the cause at Old Trafford.
But according to the Mail Online‘s Joe Bernstein, Arsene Wenger will attempt to prize the Frenchman away from Jose Mourinho’s grasp with a £40m offer if their bid for Mbappe – and Alexandre Lacazette, with whom they have entered negotiations – falls through.
Firstly, the idea of Mbappe, currently with the world at his fingertips, choosing Arsenal over Champions League holders Real Madrid is frankly laughable, so we should assume straight off the bat that the North London side will end up having to move for Martial instead (I’m also assuming that, for the sixth year running, their bid to sign Lacazette will not materialise either).
A lot can be abstracted from one slightly below par season from a talented youngster – too much, in fact. We ought to remember that there is a long road ahead for Martial, and last season’s travails would have been part of that developmental process – as opposed as a catalyst for the youngster packing his bags and leaving at the first opportunity.
