Manchester United set to offer £40m for Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan – report

Manchester United will table an offer of £40m in order to secure the services of Roma and Belgium midfielder Radja Nainggolan, according to reports from Italy.

Reports last week claimed that Jose Mourinho was willing to offer the 29-year-old a lucrative package worth £6.6m a year after tax to join Man United.

Nainggolan, when asked about a potential move away, remarked he would consider his options once he returns from holiday.

And according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato (via Daily Express), United will attempt to lure the Roma midfielder to Old Trafford by offering the Serie A side £40m.

Mourinho will be aware of the current dearth of goals in his midfield sector and how it harmed his side’s prospects of breaching the top four last season. Paul Pogba was United’s top scoring midfielder with nine; the closest to that was Marouane Fellaini with four.

That is dramatically substandard, and interest in Nainggolan, who claimed 15 goals from midfield last season, is a clear nod towards improving United’s midfield malaise in front of goal.

The 29-year-old, making 46 appearances in total, embodied Roma’s approach last season which saw them finish second with their highest ever points total in Serie A history: brutish, direct, ruthlessly forward thinking and fluid with those around him.

With Nemanja Matic giving further muscle to the base of midfield, the combination of Paul Pogba and Nainggolan could wreak havoc moving forward – especially with a striker willing to run in behind and exploit the back four.
