Manchester United target and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez is considering a move away from Spain this summer, according to reports.
The Uruguayan, who made his debut under Diego Simeone aged 18, has been on Jose Mourinho’s radar ever since he arrived at Old Trafford.
He struggled for regular game time last season at the Vicente Calderon, making just 17 La Liga appearances in total.
And according to AS Spain (via Daily Star), the 22-year-old will consider looking elsewhere for more minutes on the pitch next season.
Any transfer with Atletico this summer presents problems due to the Spanish side’s inability to sign new players until January in light of a failed appeal against a transfer ban last month, meaning the La Liga side would not be able to replace him until 2018.
The ban, which has produced a domino effect across the transfer market this summer, ended up being the foil for Antoine Griezmann’s proposed move to Old Trafford, with the Frenchman deciding to remain loyal to Simeone instead of moving away.
And this could very much prove to be a stumbling block for United in their pursuit of Gimenez, although if the promising youngster is hellbent on leaving – and if Mourinho names the right price – Atletico may end up being powerless when it comes to seeing him leave.
