Saul Niguez has signed a new nine-year Atletico Madrid contract following links with a move to Manchester United this summer.

He scored five goals in three games for Spain at the European Under-21 Championship, with an incredible hat-trick against Italy on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old has been continuously linked with a move to Old Trafford as he was first scouted by United during David Moyes’ time at the club when first-team coach Phil Neville watched him on loan at Rayo Vaellecano in 2014.

Speaking about his future, Saul opened up about why he committed his future to Diego Simeone’s side.

“I’m very happy because Atletico are my family and there is no better place that I could be,” he said.

“I will work just as always, to the maximum in order to develop my game on the pitch and to repay the confidence placed in me. I want to thank all of my team-mates and the coaching staff for their daily support to help make me the player I am.”

Antione Griezmann committed his future to Atleti after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld FIFA’s transfer ban which left the club unable to register any new players until January.

He claimed it would have been a harsh blow to leave the Vicente Calderon following the court’s decision, and it seems Saul also felt the same way after putting pen to paper for a long stay at the club.
