Jose Mourinho at odds with Manchester United board over transfers

by Leo Nieboer

Jose Mourinho has reached an impasse with the board over the transfers this summer following the club’s reluctance to broker ‘bad deals’ over targets.

Victor Lindelof remains the only player to be added to the ranks with just a few days until the squad jets off to Los Angeles for their pre-season tour.

Players like Alvaro Morata, Nemanja Matic, Fabinho and Ivan Perisic have all been on the Portuguese’s radar for some time but it remains unclear when – or if – they will eventually complete moves to Old Trafford.

And the stagnancy, as reported earlier this week, has frustrated Mourinho, who wants to see his targets arrive as soon as possible.

This is a problem that many managers have encountered in the past. Tony Pulis, for example, left Crystal Palace for that exact reason just a few days before a new campaign.

Mourinho may be the face of this club and the one who receives the brunt of criticism, but when it comes to the bureaucracy over transfers he is actually relatively powerless.

But the board ought to know that, if they want to see the Portuguese build on the success of last season, they need to satisfy his demands. And fast.
