Jose Mourinho has offered to double the wages of Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic in an attempt to lure him to Manchester United this summer, according to reports.
The Portuguese, according to reports from Spain, is keen on seeing the Croat international follow Alvaro Morata to Old Trafford over the next few weeks.
Kovacic began life as an attacking midfielder but has been used primarily as a deep-lying playmaker at the Bernabeu since joining in 2015.
And Mourinho, according to the Express‘ Dan Gibbs, will try and tempt the 23-year-old by offering to double his salary next season.
We cannot know whether money is Kovacic’s central object of desire. If it is, then logic states he will be on the next flight to Manchester.
And yet, should that be the case, there is a part of me that wouldn’t want him to join. Mourinho himself has stated explicitly in the past that he will only sign players committed to the badge, and not the paycheque they’d receive.
Then again, with only one new face in the squad ahead of pre-season, which starts formally on Sunday, supporters will understand Mourinho trying to tie up deals in any way he can over the next few days.
