Manchester United considering bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl – report

Manchester United are considering a bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl this summer, according to reports.

Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic looks set to join Man United after a £40m fee was agreed for his signature, but Antonio Conte wants to secure the services of Tiemoue Bakayoko before letting the Serb leave.

Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on securing another midfielder after Matic, however, with Fabinho and Mateo Kovacic emerging as possible targets.

And according to the Mail Online‘s Adam Crafton, United are considering a bid for the 21-year-old, but may wait until January as the youngster continues to recover from a broken ankle.

Matic is a brilliant addition but not the long-term Michael Carrick replacement that Mourinho so desperately needs. The 28-year-old is more of a midfield juggernaut endowed with valuable experience at the summit of the Premier League.

Weigl, however, really could be just what United have been looking for, and I do not say that lightly. Replacing Carrick is a nearly impossible job, but the components of the German’s game are unquestionably reminiscent of the Englishman’s craft.

Mourinho has always placed emphasis on the ‘killer ball’ – the kind of pass that enforces an immediate transition between defence and attack, and few Bundesliga players do this better than Weigl. He has the poise to hold the ball for just a second longer without conceding any space, before then launching a pin-point ball either out wide or straight to the striker’s feet.

The German has developed a mastery over a tenet of the beautiful game that is often ignored: precision and timing. Whether he ends up at Old Trafford or not, he is one to watch.
