Luka Modric: Manchester United is a step down for James Rodriguez

Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric claims a move to Manchester United this summer would be a step down for James Rodriguez.

He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after a disappointing season at the Santiago Bernabeu, struggling to pick up first-team game time under Zinedine Zidane.

The 25-year-old made the move to Madrid from Monaco following the 2014 World Cup and is said to be keen on the opportunity to get back to his best with a move to Old Trafford and a reunion with Jose Mourinho.

Speaking about a potential move, Modric believes leaving the Bernabeu for any other club would be a step in the wrong direction.

“It’s certainly not an easy decision to leave Madrid,” he said.

“When you leave here, nothing is the same. You’re at the best club in the world, that’s for sure, and from there you can only go down.

“Everyone will have their reasons. If I continue like this, I will do everything possible to stay, but things in football change fast.”

It seems like he’s almost certain to make the move this summer after he failed to make the match day squad for the Champions League final victory over Juventus.

He has been linked with a United move but it remains to be seen if we’ll see United trying to deal with Madrid again after negotaitions for Alvaro Morata fell through.
