Jose Mourinho’s transfer plans have had plenty of scrutiny already this summer despite the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof strengthening two key areas which really needed new bodies.
But with a new defensive midfielder still so essential and not yet done, as well as the need for potentially a new winger, more questions are being asked. So, an update from our favourite Jorge Mendes mouthpiece Duncan Castles in his latest Daily Record article makes for an interesting read.
Duncan says Mourinho wants to bring in a defensive midfielder, a full-back and either a No.10 or a winger this summer to compliment Lukaku and Lindelof. Yes Duncan, come bearing good news like this more often.
A new defensive midfielder? Absolutely essential. Without one, I can’t see United mounting a serious title challenge next season. A new full-back? Sort of surprising but more than likely going to be somebody who can play at both left and right-back, or somebody like Fabinho who can operate in the defensive midfield role as well as right-back. A new winger or No.10? Definitely a winger but I feel we’re already pretty stacked in the No.10 role, maybe Mourinho wants to replace Wayne Rooney in that regard though.
An interesting part of Duncan’s article is something I always thought would happen – Mourinho is happy to offer Ibrahimovic a short-term contract in January after he recovers, meaning he won’t sign a second striker. After news broke that Zlatan was free to use our training facilities to rehabilitate his injury, this looked on the cards.
United have brought in two key signings already this summer but as you can see we’ve still got plenty of work to do in order for Mourinho to be happy with his squad. Ed Woodward, get cracking.
