Andy Cole gives his thoughts on Romelu Lukaku’s Manchester United transfer

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has backed Romelu Lukaku to succeed at Old Trafford after completing his switch from Everton earlier this week.

The club announced on Monday that a £75m deal for Lukaku, who claimed 25 goals last season, had been agreed, making him Mourinho’s most high profile signing of the window so far.

Lukaku noted soon after joining that he couldn’t turn down the biggest club in the world and pledged to work harder than ever before under Mourinho.

And Cole, speaking to MUTV, was full of optimism following the 24-year-old’s arrival.

“He’s a massive signing,” he said.

“They’re all big-money signings nowadays but he’s proven in the Premier League. He’ll get goals and that’s what Manchester United missed last season. I think he’s got plenty of those in him.

“Since he left Chelsea earlier on in his career, the way he’s gone about his business is by getting goals. He did it at West Brom, then got quite a few more goals at Everton, and hopefully that trend will continue at Manchester United.”

Lukaku left for West Bromwich Albion in 2012 because he knew he was ready to feature on a regular basis in the Premier League. Plain and simple. He wasn’t binned, nor was he rendered not good enough; the Belgian knew he’d see more game time at the Hawthorns as opposed to Stamford Bridge.

Since then, he’s made the Premier League his plaything. Every season, without fail, has seen the big striker exact his idiosyncratic malice on defenders, prompting more and more murmurs of a step-up being necessary as time went on.

The world will eagerly await to see how Lukaku fares on the biggest of stages next season, and I for one cannot wait.
