Jose Mourinho confirms Man United will make more signings this summer

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Manchester United intend to sign two more players this summer if everything goes to plan.

Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof have so far been signed but with a real need to strengthen in midfield as well as on the wings in attack, Mourinho’s work to improve his squad is far from finished.

In his first press conference since May, Mourinho offered an insight into Man United’s plans but admitted Ed Woodward faced a tough task in the current transfer window.

He said: “We don’t have our door closed, we are not happy with just Lukaku and Lindelof, we need more. We wanted four, so I would say 50% of the job done, but I don’t want to say that because everything it’s so difficult, I would not like to be in Ed Woodward’s position negotiating because everything is really difficult.

“So maybe we don’t get two, we get one, but we need one player to give us more options, the squad needs that balance, we have players that belong to the squad but cannot play for next three or four months, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, if Zlatan stays we have three or four players that only by the end of the year can be back to football.

“So we need two more players I would say, at least one, but I don’t want to say Matic or any other name because I don’t think it’s correct.”

Who will those two signings be? Everybody will speculate but the likes of Nemanja Matic, Fabinho and Ivan Perisic are the primary contenders. The Chelsea midfielder has not travelled on their pre-season tour so will almost certainly be leaving but Juventus are also interested in signing him, so Mourinho has competition for his signature.

As for Fabinho, that’s the signing all United fans want to make but we’re yet to see if that will happen and Perisic is a move which has dragged on for some time, to the point where it’s a bit painful and laborious.

United were brilliant in Mourinho’s first summer as United boss and although this one hasn’t gone as much to plan in what has proved to be an absolutely crazy transfer window, there is a real confidence that Woodward will get the deals over the line before the end of August. Here’s hoping he does.
