Jose Mourinho has opened up about Manchester United’s attempts to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the summer transfer window.

He has been amongst the top targets this summer, however, after being left unable to reach an agreement with Real Madrid over a fee, he had been forced to go elsewhere.

Man United turned their attention to Romelu Lukaku in a deal that could reach £90million, making his debut against LA Galaxy in the 5-2 victory on Sunday morning.

Speaking about the transfer interest, Mourinho spoke highly of the 24-year-old.

“It is a shame,” he said.

“He is a player who made it to the first team with me and I have a special liking for. I enjoyed watching his evolution in Juventus and Madrid.

“But we have not reached an agreement with his club and I don’t think he can end with us.”

Man United were also left disappointed after Antoine Griezmann opted to remain at Atletico Madrid this summer, losing out on two big potential targets.

Lukaku and Lindelof are the only new arrivals so far, however, the club are currently negotiating with different clubs and Mourinho has already confirmed he’s expecting two more players, even if it may not be Morata.
