Manchester United supporters were quick to question Jose Mourinho’s decision to utilise Andreas Pereira as a defensive midfielder during their side’s 2-1 pre-season win over Real Salt Lake City.
He went about his business diligently, making several interceptions and moving the ball quickly, but hardly got the chance to showcase the skills that served him so well at Granada last season.
And supporters, in response, were disappointed not to see the 21-year-old playing further forward.
pereira needs to play further up. so much quality going forward

Mourinho has a difficult conundrum when it comes to Pereira. The youngster deserves time in the first team, but where?
At Granada he did indeed feature as a central midfielder but had the freedom to roam forward – something that won’t be possible with Paul Pogba occupying that type of role instead.
He featured more regularly as either a No.10 or out wide in Spain, but with the former position not available in Mourinho’s current set-up and heavy competition for places out wide – especially with Ivan Perisic verging on a move to Old Trafford – the avenue through which to breach the starting XI next season remains a mystery.
