Jesse Lingard: Anthony Martial will only get better at Manchester United

Jesse Lingard has been full of praise for Manchester United team-mate Anthony Martial following his role in the opening goal of the game against Real Madrid in Santa Clara on Sunday.

The Frenchman took on four or five defenders on the left-hand side, dribbling in and out, weaving in between Real’s players, before he put the ball on a plate for Lingard.

He has struggled for consistency at Old Trafford, especially last season as he failed to cement his place in the side, but hopes are he picks up from his debut campaign where he finished as the club’s top goal scorer.

Speaking about Martial, Lingard believes his third season at United could be his most successful one yet.

“It was great,” he said. “Anthony’s got great feet when it comes to close control and he’s got the confidence to do it in a game. It’s a nightmare for defenders. Luckily I’ve got myself into space at the back post, got away from my man and then put it away.

“He’s only going to get better. He’s still young and if he carries on with that confidence [he showed for the goal] in the next few games and throughout the season, he’ll help us a lot.”

It’s hard to believe but Martial is still only 21 and he’ll continue to grow as he picks up more experience under Mourinho at United.

He’s not the complete player yet but there’s no doubting the fact that he possesses all the attributes to become a top player at Old Trafford.
