Memphis Depay has reacted to the prospect of making a return to Manchester United following a promising first few months at Lyon.
The Dutchman completed a £16m move to Lyon back in January after failing to make a single Premier League start under Jose Mourinho.
He has experienced something of a renaissance ever since moving to France, triggering a few murmurs of Man United activating a buyback clause on his exciting contract.
But Memphis, when asked about the possibility of leaving Lyon, was quick to stamp out the idea completely.
“No, to be honest. It’s not in my thoughts,” he said.
“I’m very focused on Lyon, and I’m very happy about my choice, and I don’t think of anything else other than to do the best for this team.”
The winger has not necessarily taken Ligue 1 by storm. Indeed, there have been a handful of forgettable performances to ponder over, but one thing is clear: Memphis has his appetite back.
A bad game for Memphis at Lyon differs immensely to the type of poor showing we grew accustomed to at Old Trafford. With the former, the 23-year-old has unfailingly conjured up a type of fearlessness that supporters rarely saw in Manchester. He is keen to express himself, even if it doesn’t always come off – exemplified most potently with a half-way line goal against Toulouse, which actually came in the middle of a hitherto ineffectual performance.
Why, therefore, would Memphis even consider returning to a place that, for one reason or another, starved him of his creative zeal for so long?
