Jose Mourinho explains why Victor Lindelof has not been starting with Eric Bailly

Jose Mourinho has hinted the reason behind not starting Victor Lindelof with Eric Bailly in any of Manchester United’s pre-season tour games is because of his European suspension.

Uefa confirmed on Monday Bailly would miss United’s European Super Cup with Real Madrid in two weeks and the Champions League group stage opener after being set off in the Europa League semi-final second leg.

He received a straight red following a skirmish with Celta Vigo at Old Trafford and Uefa decided to impose a three-match ban.

Speaking about his decision, Mourinho has revealed his understanding.

“I think we will understand the reason in a couple of days,” Mourinho said. “Bailly is suspended for the first two matches (in the Super Cup and Champions League), as you know, and I think in the next couple of days we will have the understanding of why I play Lindelof and Smalling.”

Lindelof has started alongside Phil Jones once and Chris Smalling twice during United’s pre-season tour, but only featured alongside Bailly in the second-half at the LA Galaxy.

Mourinho subbed Lindelof, Smalling and Daley Blind at halftime against Barcelona on Wednesday and admitted that he was unhappy with some of United’s defending.
