Jose Mourinho provides injury update following Barcelona defeat

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United didn’t pick up any fresh injuries during their 1-0 defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday.

Neymar’s strike during a first half dominated by the ‘MSN’ proved enough to hand Ernesto Valverde’s men a narrow win in Washington.

Jesse Lingard appeared to be forced off with a knock in the second half whilst Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini also went down in discomfort.

But Mourinho, speaking after the game, noted that there were no new injuries to contend with, adding that both Ander Herrera and Juan Mata will be available to feature against Valerenga on Saturday.

Eight games over a 28 period would signal danger for a side still recovering from a Battle of the Somme-esque injury crisis earlier this year, but United have come out of their United States tour relatively unscathed.

Mata picked up a strained ankle and Herrera basically just got smacked in the ribs, but Mourinho – and, more importantly, Ed Woodward – ought to make note of what would happen, as things stand, if either Herrera or Paul Pogba suffered a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

United do, as demonstrated over the last few weeks, possess decent strength in depth, but not where they need it most: at the core of midfield.
