Timothy Fosu-Mensah keen on developing at Manchester United next season

Timothy Fosu-Mensah has set his sights on developing further at Manchester United next season following a promising pre-season tour.

The Dutchman was a regular feature in the first team squad last year but only managed three starts and eleven appearances in total.

He has been an impressive force during pre-season, however, producing dominant displays on the right hand side against Real Madrid and Valerenga.

And the 19-year-old, speaking after the 3-0 win in Oslo, was clearly determined to develop further at Old Trafford next season.

“I’m just trying to develop my game. I’m young and still have a lot to learn, but I’m learning every day,” he said.

“I’m working with one of the best managers in the world, it’s something I’m grateful for and, as I say, I’m learning every day.”

“I’m really happy. Everyone got their minutes tonight, so I think the whole team is building up to fitness and it’s going really well. We’ve won a few games and we’re working towards the game against Real Madrid next week.

“I think we’re stronger than we were last season. We’re working on a couple of points and we’ve had a couple of great additions to the squad in Romelu [Lukaku] and Victor [Lindelof]. I think we’re stronger.

“That’s what we’re going for [the Premier League title]. We’re Manchester United, so of course that’s what we are going for.”

A window of opportunity opened up for Fosu-Mensah last season, only for cruel fate to deprive him of the chance to take it.

Mourinho had lost Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba, and Michael Carrick needed a rest ahead of a clash with Swansea in early May; the teenager could have finally demonstrated his worth in midfield but ended up dislocating his shoulder against Manchester City.

But he has made an emphatic recovery and clearly went up a few gears over pre-season, bombing forward at will and displaying a kind of positional intelligence indicative of being around the first team since February 2016.

Supporters will no doubt want to see him receive a few more starts next season to take the load off Antonio Valencia.
