Jose Mourinho reacts to Neymar’s world record move to Paris Saint Germain

Jose Mourinho has reacted to Neymar’s imminent £198m move to Paris Saint Germain from Barcelona, noting that transfers of a similar fee will continue to occur over the next few years.

Manchester United sent ripples across the footballing world last year by shelling out a then world record £89m for Paul Pogba.

But PSG, as revealed on Wednesday, look set to more than double that figure to bring Neymar to Ligue 1 next season in a deal that will see the Brazilian earn £775,477 a week.

And Mourinho, speaking after Man United’s 2-1 win over Sampdoria in Dublin, noted that even such an astronomical figure will be made to seem nominal in time.

“The problem is not Neymar the problem is the consequence of the Neymar deal. We will see more £80m, £60m players,” he said.

“When we paid the amount for Pogba I said that he was not expensive, I don’t think Neymar for £200m is expensive.”

The Portuguese insisted soon after spending £89m on Pogba that such a figure will be dwarfed in just a year or two. And so he has been proven right.

This summer’s transfer window, in concurrence with the growingly supervenient force of global capitalism, has reached new heights of inflation and absurdity this summer, and it will only head in one direction.

A prediction: two years from now, £89m for the Frenchman will be considered a steal.
