Early Manchester United team news ahead of Real Madrid clash

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United will take on Champions League winners Real Madrid in Macedonia on Tuesday in the UEFA Super Cup and have a chance to pick up more silverware and lay down an early marker to Europe’s elite ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

Jose Mourinho will be without Eric Bailly and Phil Jones – arguably his two best centre backs over pre-season – with the former still serving a three game ban and the latter banned for two after verbally abusing a doping official in the wake of Man United’s 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League final.

Sergio Romero and Jesse Lingard didn’t travel to Dublin for Man United’s 2-1 pre-season win over Sampdoria but should be available for selection in Skopje.

Supporters will be keen to see more of new signing Nemanja Matic after the Serbian, despite having no game time over pre-season, delivered a powerful performance against the Italian side on Wednesday.

Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo continue to recover from injuries sustained over a busy period for United’s medical staff last season.

For Madrid, doubt looms over whether Cristiano Ronaldo will face his old club. The Portuguese hasn’t played a single game over pre-season after being afforded extra time off following his exploits at the Confederations Cup but has been training hard to place himself in contention for the clash against his former boss.
