He featured in Mourinho’s first pre-season game against Wigan last summer but joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan just one month later.
The 24-year-old endured a difficult time in the Bundesliga, missing eight months of the season through injury and was ruled out of the German Cup final with an infected tattoo even though the club had warned him against it.
He did not report back for first-team training at Carrington on July 8 and has not even featured for the club’s reserves this summer.
He had been warned not to get his tattoo, but he got it anyway, just as he did before United’s FA Cup win against Crystal Palace at Wembley, but to his horror, it became infected just days before the biggest game of his career.
Penarol have now allegedly reached an agreement with United over a transfer fee – which includes a sell-on clause as he looks to sign a three-year deal with his boyhood club.
A move is expected to be confirmed as early as next week as he looks to get his career back on the right track.
