Gianluca di Marzio: Manchester United have entered talks with Zlatan Ibrahimovic over new deal

Gianluca di Marzio has confirmed that Manchester United have entered talks with Zlatan Ibrahimovic over a short term contract once he returns from injury.

The Swede was officially released by the club in June after seeing his season – in which he claimed 28 goals – cut short by a knee ligament injury sustained against Anderlecht in April.

Jose Mourinho has since implied that the 35-year-old would remain at Old Trafford and claimed ahead of the UEFA Super Cup clash that he was “closer” to Man United than any other club.

And Di Marzio recently confirmed that club was indeed holding talks with the 35-year-old over a potential new contract in the new year.

You always sensed that Zlatan was destined to remain in Manchester once it became clear he had no interest whatsoever in moving to the MLS – the standard alternative for convalescing veterans at the highest level.

AC Milan had expressed interest, but the Swede’s work at Old Trafford is far from over. He understands the club and, through sheer virtue of his presence, forces others to understand too.

Whether he can return to his startling best following nine months on the sidelines remains to be seen, but make no mistake: United need him in the dressing room next season.
