Antonio Valencia believes Romelu Lukaku will excel at Manchester United

Antonio Valencia believes that Romelu Lukaku will score plenty of goals at Manchester United this season, noting that the Belgian is a nightmare to face as a defender.

The Belgian completed a £75m move to Old Trafford from Everton last month and claimed pre-season goals against Real Salt Lake, Manchester City and Valerenga.

He officially opened his account in a red shirt with a poacher’s goal in the 62nd minute of Man United’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

And Valencia, speaking with Inside United, was adamant that there would be plenty more to come for Lukaku this season.

“Lukaku has done a great job with the clubs that he has been at,” he said. “I am a kid next to Romelu! [Laughs] He truly is strong. I have seen him work on the field and in the gym. It’s truly incredible to see his strength, power and the intelligence he possesses. We hope it is a good year for him and the team.”

“He is strong, but he also has good movement around the field and if I am playing as a defender then I would not like to play against him!”

The fact that Lukaku, in a game that saw United struggle to open up a brilliant Madrid side, received two golden chances – firing the first painfully over the bar – is a truly exciting prospect.

Some strikers have a natural capacity to find themselves in goalscoring positions and Lukaku is one of them. Explaining such an eye for goal in a conventional tactical sense misses the point. He just sniffs out chances before anybody else has blinked.

Jose Mourinho has previously noted that he would be pleased with the Belgian if he contributed to the side’s overall approach but supporters, above anything, will just be praying for chances to fall the 24-year-old’s way as much as possible this season.
