Gary Neville urges Jose Mourinho to sign a winger before the window shuts

Gary Neville has called on Jose Mourinho to sign a world class winger at Manchester United before the transfer window shuts.

The Portuguese admitted in his press conference ahead of Man United’s 4-0 win over West Ham United that he still wanted to add a winger to his squad but noted he wouldn’t cry if nobody else came in.

United’s main target out wide has been Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic but that deal appears to be petering out after the club refused to meet the £45m minimum asking price set by the Serie A side.

But Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, has encouraged Mourinho to find a traditional winger before the window closes in just over two weeks’ time.

“Is Rashford a wide player? Not really,” he noted.

“That is where United could get one world class winger and it would be a complete squad. They have spent a lot of money and there is no excuse for Manchester United not to challenge for the league.

“They have to challenge this year. Last season was not good enough and it was a big under performance from the players.”

Mourinho’s men were rampant against West Ham, creating innumerable avenues through which to feed the devastatingly prolific Romelu Lukaku, and they will, as their manager has noted, pose a threat this season even if they don’t sign any more players.

That being said, bringing in a winger – somebody who specialises in getting to the byline and playing pin-point crosses into the box – would add an entirely new dimension to United’s attacking play that will, no doubt, give Lukaku the chance to wreak havoc with his physical presence and, as seen for his second goal on Sunday, ability to sneak in between defenders and find the perfect position.
