Romelu Lukaku discusses his relationship with Marcus Rashford at Manchester United

Romelu Lukaku has been reflecting on his “special” relationship with Marcus Rashford after claiming a brace on his Manchester United debut during a 4-0 win over West Ham United.

The pair combined brilliantly for Man United’s first goal of the new Premier League season, with the teenager picking up the ball in his own half, bursting down the middle before sliding through a perfect pass for the Belgian to swipe home.

They continued to terrorise Slaven Bilic’s back four all afternoon as Lukaku added another goal from a free kick whilst Rashford struck the post and made a mockery of Pablo Zabaleta.

And the 24-year-old, speaking after the game, noted that the pair had an immediate chemistry on the pitch.

“Me and Marcus, we really clicked from the first day when I arrived,” he said. “I get along with everybody in the dressing room, but with Marcus, it’s something special.”

Lukaku has more experience at this level than his younger counterpart, but the pair are firmly on the same wavelength. The message to both of them is clear: be direct, fearless, quick, interchanging with each other constantly and always looking to find pockets of space.

That mantra was crystallised with that opening goal against West Ham. Rashford’s run was piercing and but his subtle movement inside before letting the ball go, coupled with Lukaku’s instinctive turn towards goal, was what ripped the momentum out of West Ham’s back four. You can’t really practice for that moment. The two, deep down, just knew what the other was going to do and the end product was emphatic.
