Journalist Xavier Jacobelli explains why Ivan Perisic is staying at Inter Milan

Corriere Dello Sport journalist Xavier Jacobelli has explained why Manchester United target Ivan Perisic has decided to remain at Inter Milan this season, noting that new manager Luciano Spalletti has made some important changes at the San Siro.

The Croat was initially keen on a move to Old Trafford and Spalletti, soon after joining the club, appeared to be consigned to the notion that he would leave.

However, following months of fruitless negotiations, with Inter playing hardball with Man United over the transfer fee, the 29-year-old has experienced a change of heart and will not move anywhere this summer.

And Jacobelli, speaking on Tutto Mercato Web Radio, confirmed that various changes by Spalletti have forced Perisic into changing his mind over joining United.

“With [Luciano] Spalletti Inter have made a great transformation,” he said.

“He is working well and in depth: I would highlight the work he did in defence, with the arrival of [Milan] Skriniar, [defence] is no longer the weakest ring, and with Perisic, he decided to stay.

“[Mauro] Icardi’s words are very significant: this Nerazzurri pre-season reminds me of the first year of [Antonio] Conte at Juventus, when the Bianconeri were trophyless.”

In hindsight, the very fact that Perisic never really attempted to force through a move back in June when the two clubs begun negotiations highlights a lack of desire to wear the shirt that Jose Mourinho deems necessary at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese recently reiterated his desire to see a winger join the ranks before the window closes in two weeks’ time. But his tone was one of speculative hope rather than adamant expectation.

United would reap the benefits of securing a winger capable of producing dangerous crosses for Romelu Lukaku, but Mourinho’s options are wearing thin.
