Jesse Lingard full of praise for Jose Mourinho’s summer signings

Jesse Lingard has expressed his delight at seeing both Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic immediately settle into life at Manchester United after joining over the summer.

Lukaku arrived back in July from Everton for a fee of £75m and, on top of three goals over pre-season, claimed a goal on his competitive debut against Real Madrid before scoring a brace against West Ham United last Sunday.

And Matic, despite having virtually no pre-season, has quickly asserted himself as an indomitable lynchpin at the base of midfield since signing for £40m earlier this month.

Speaking earlier this week, Lingard was full of praise for the way both signings have seamlessly transitioned into life at Old Trafford.

“You see the pace of Rashy (Marcus Rashford) and the power of Rom,” he said. “That link-up over the course of the season will become stronger.”

“(Matic) is taller than I originally thought! Obviously you don’t really watch a lot of other teams, but you see what he can bring: he stabilises the play, he breaks up the play.”

Mourinho is building something at Old Trafford. The Portuguese, in Paul Pogba, Matic and Lukaku, is building a powerful spine unmistakably reminiscent of victorious sides in the past.

At Porto, however, he deployed a sturdy midfield trio comprising of Costinha, Maniche and Pedto Mendes as the fulcrum of his Champions League winning side. His first Chelsea side was built on the aggression offered by the likes of John Terry and Didier Drogba, adding Diego Costa and Matic the second time round.

His sides of the past were more experienced, but make no mistake: Mourinho is slowly but surely laying the groundwork for a formula that has proven to be unassailable over the years.
