Jose Mourinho has backed Anthony Martial to succeed at Manchester United, claiming he’s expecting a better season from the Frenchman this year.

Martial has failed to keep his place in the side after struggling with consistency and although he’s started the new campaign well, is still hoping to have a big impact.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a Old Trafford exit with reports suggesting Mourinho would be open to selling him, especially to secure a move for Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan.

Speaking about the Frenchman, Mourinho insists he’s got a part to play this year.

“I have faith in him. As a pure attacking player, Anthony is a good player. I believe he’s one of the players who is going to have a better season this season than the previous season,” said Mourinho.

“I look at some of my players and I’m sure that some of them will be better this season than they were last season, and Anthony is that for sure.

“Probably the player I was looking for wasn’t a pure winger because I have pure wingers.

“Probably the player I was looking for was a player that allows me to play with three at the back and have a wing-back.”

He enjoyed an incredible debut campaign in Old Trafford and it’s clear he possesses bags of talent as we’ve seen here and there, but once he finds his feet under Mourinho, there will be no stopping him as a player who holds all the attributes to succeed, as Mourinho suggests.
