Portuguese media outlet A Bola has confirmed that representatives from Manchester United were present during Benfica’s 1-1 draw with Rio Ave on Saturday.
They have also been drawn in the same Champions League group as Rui Vitoria’s side alongside Swiss champions Basel and CSKA Moscow.
And A Bola have confirmed that United, alongside the likes of Leicester City and Manchester City, were present to watch Benfica this weekend.
We have to consider the possibility that this visit is entirely grounded in preparing for the back to back clashes with Benfica over October. That would be perfectly reasonable.
That said, with Mourinho sending scouts to monitor Valencia’s Ezequiel Garay last weekend, perhaps the Portuguese is analysing a number of options ahead of the January transfer window (any new arrivals this summer appear to be unlikely with just four days of the window left).
The 54-year-old is keen on securing a left back, whilst also keeping an eye on centre-backs, and may be tracking the progress of the talented Alex Grimaldo, who came through Barcelona’s La Masia system.
