Jose Mourinho, Romelu Lukaku, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Phil Jones have all been nominated for the Premier League manager and player of the month award for August respectively following a perfect start to Manchester United’s Premier League campaign.
The Portuguese, following what he described as a “perfect” pre-season, has guided his side to three straight wins and top of the table ahead of the international break.
Lukaku has made a storming start to his Man United career, claiming four goals in as many games, while Mkhitaryan has claimed five assists, and Jones, alongside Eric Bailly, has been indomitable at the back.
The four have been duly nominated for the manager and player of the months awards at the end of August.
Out of the three players, only one comes close to deserving this accolade: Mkhitaryan.
Don’t get me wrong, Lukaku and Jones have been scintillating, but the Armenian has been running the show so far. He is the first player to claim five assists in the opening three games in six Premier League seasons, and is just three away from matching Philipe Coutinho’s best total for an entire season.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic himself has said it: this could be Mkhitaryan’s season.
