Romelu Lukaku reveals phone call with Jose Mourinho before joining Manchester United

Romelu Lukaku has revealed that he spoke with Jose Mourinho on the phone for over an hour before joining Manchester United in July.

The Belgian, despite being set for Chelsea, completed a £75m move to Old Trafford back in July and claimed three goals over pre-season.

And he has made a storming start to the 2017/18 campaign, claiming four goals in as many matches alongside recently claiming a hat-trick against Gibraltar.

Speaking after the 9-0 win over the minnows, Lukaku noted that he spoke for a long time with Mourinho ahead of the move, noting that he always wanted to play under the Portuguese.

The myth over Lukaku’s departure from Chelsea in 2014 being somehow influenced by unrest between him and Mourinho has now been well and truly eradicated. In fact, they will tell you that, ahead of his move to Everton, the opposite was true.

Mourinho admired the striker but knew he wouldn’t get minutes at Chelsea. Joining Everton made perfect sense and he went on to cement himself as the Toffees’ top goalscorer for four successive campaigns. This was, in hindsight, a necessary intermediary stage for Lukaku before once again joining up with Mourinho – this time as his primary threat up front, and he hasn’t disappointed so far.
