Manchester United promote Scott McTominay to first team squad following Andreas Pereira loan move

Manchester United have promoted youngster Scott McTominay to the first team squad after Andreas Pereira joined Valencia on loan.

The midfielder was handed a place in the final five match-day squads of the 2016/17 Premier League season and made his first senior start against Crystal Palace in May.

He was then handed a place on Man United’s pre-season tour and impressed with a series of dynamic displays in the middle, claiming his first senior goal against Valerenga in Oslo.

And Mourinho, following Pereira’s decision to join Valencia on a season-long loan, has handed the 20-year-old a chance to assert himself on the first team.

This inclusion is indeed no more than what McTominay deserves. Out of any youngster over pre-seasom – Pereira included – the Scot looked most comfortable with the ball at his feet, smartly finding space for himself and always looking to play through the lines.

Mourinho admires him for this exact reason. The Portuguese places emphasis on the “killer ball” and McTominay, whilst disciplined and hardworking, can do exactly that. He has a patient yet penetrative style that his manager clearly wants to develop further.

Supporters will hope to see the youngster become the latest academy product to assert himself on the starting line-up at Old Trafford over the next year.
