Jose Mourinho has challenged Henrikh Mkhitaryan to become the fulcrum and centre-piece of Manchester United’s attacking play this season, according to ESPN.
With five assists in August, Mkhitaryan’s start to the season has been nothing short of magical and for Man United fans we’re finally seeing the sort of consistency which eluded him last season.
In his debut campaign at United, Mkhitaryan had fleeting performances which were sprinkled with stardust but they were too far and few between for a player who had done it so consistently the year before in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.
Now, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Mkhitaryan is United’s centre-piece at the moment; Romelu Lukaku is finishing the chances, Paul Pogba is creating from deep and both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are scoring too but Mkhitaryan is the heartbeat. Everything is going through him.
And he is only getting better with every performance. For one reason or another, Mkhitaryan massively struggled to settle at United last year and he got some tough love treatment from Mourinho. It could have gone either way but it worked, he knuckled down and fought hard to improve himself.
We’re seeing the fruits of that hard work and graft. We’re seeing the Mkhitaryan who got 20+ assists in a single season with Borussia Dortmund, the player who tore defences to shreds on his own. Mourinho wants Mkhitaryan to be United’s centre-piece? Well, he is doing just that right now and long may it continue.
