Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes Jose Mourinho has right balance in his squad to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Man United enjoyed a smooth pre-season comprising of seven games before suffering a sobering defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.
And they have made an emphatic start to their Premier League campaign with three straight wins, claiming ten goals and conceding none in the process.
Speaking earlier this week, Berbatov, who scored 56 goals in four seasons at Old Trafford, noted that the current squad at Mourinho’s disposal has what it takes to mount a significant title challenge over the next eight months.
“I watch almost every game and I would like to see them become champions in the end,” he said.
“The squad is great. There is good balance in almost every position, so this will be very helpful in the long [Premier League] season as well as the other competitions they are in.
“I could see the team was in great shape and they were also really strong as a group.”
For all the noise surrounding United’s positive start to the campaign, Mourinho’s men haven’t been confronted with any meaningful challenges so far.
They have gone up against lesser opponents with a full week of preparation behind them. This is the kind of luxury Chelsea enjoyed on their march to the title last season but United will no longer have such luxuries. They have a 22 day period comprising of seven games in September that will, you sense, tell supporters much more about this side’s title credentials.
