Ryan Giggs admits he wanted to sign Renato Sanches at Manchester United

Ryan Giggs has revealed that he wanted to sign Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches during his time as assistant manager at Manchester United.

The Portuguese was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford back in 2016 but ended up joining Bayern Munich after Louis van Gaal stalled over the move.

He struggled for minutes during his first season under Carlo Ancelotti and has joined Swansea City on loan for the rest of the season.

And Giggs, speaking on Sky Sports, was full of praise for Paul Clement for securing a talent he had touted during his time at Old Trafford.

“I remember watching him three years ago in Louis’ first season and instantly liking him,” Giggs said.

“I thought then that he would suit Premier League football. Paul Clement’s ties to Bayern and his friendship with Carlo Ancelotti has obviously got a lot to do with him coming to Swansea.

“But you’ve got to capitalise on stuff like that. He’s a fantastic player and I think he will be one of the most exciting players in the league.”

Sanches has the raw makings of a devastating footballer but lacks the pedigree needed sustain a place in the starting XI at a big club. And Man United, in this sense, may have dogged a bullet by signing him as a teenager.

Jose Mourinho has publicly noted that he would have fought to sign Sanches and perhaps his loan spell in the Premier League will serve as a perfect opportunity to inspect his talent from close before making a bid.
