Manchester United fans lament wastefulness of Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Champions League win against FC Basel

Manchester United fans lamented the second-half performance of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the Armenian’s wastefulness in possession as he played 90 minutes in the Reds’ 3-0 victory against FC Basel on Tuesday night.

Mkhitaryan has, statistically, had an incredible start to the season, with five assists in four Premier League games. Yet his performances have often underwhelmed despite his brilliant stats.

The 26-year-old pulls off some wonderful pieces of skill and some passes of genuine world-class quality, but can disappear for significant periods of time. United fans were quick to point that out in Tuesday’s evening’s second half, but more notably his wastefulness.

Mkhitaryan certainly missed his fair share of chances. The Armenian should have put United ahead early on after a fantastic outside-of-the-boot clipped ball from Juan Mata, but he headed well over instead of directing the ball downwards.

Later on in the first half, after his first shot had ricocheted off the post unfortunately, he looked to chip the goalkeeper, only for the shot to land right in the goalkeeper’s arms.

Despite those misses, some United fans were ecstatic with the performance of Mkhitaryan.

Sometimes underwhelming, but ultimately productive? That appears to be Mkhitaryan’s mantra in a United shirt so far this season.

While he frustrates throughout the game, he does come up with the final balls required. In a United team where that is often the one piece of the jigsaw missing, you’d feel that Mourinho will be unlikely to drop him anytime soon.
