Angel Gomes stalling on new Manchester United contract amid interest from Barcelona – report

Angel Gomes has stalled on a new contract at Manchester United after attracting interest from Barcelona’s youth academy, according to reports.

The teenager became the first player born in the 21st century to play in the Premier League after coming on for Wayne Rooney during the latter stages of Man United’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last season.

And Gomes, who picked up the Jimmy Murphy ‘Young Player of the Year’ award back in May, has continued to impress, claiming a brace against FC Basel and starring in a 4-3 comeback win over Arsenal for the Under 18s.

But according to the Sun‘s Warren Haughton, Gomes was set to sign a new deal with the club ahead of his birthday in late August but has stalled after receiving interest from La Masia.

The Catalans have clearly taken note of Gomes’ mazy, fluid style on the ball and seen something they could work with. His style is indeed reminiscent of a young Bojan: a superbly low centre of gravity, intricate on the ball, adept at beating players and blessed with an eye for goal.

But United simply cannot let a player of Gomes’ natural ability have his head turned. Barcelona’s youth academy, after all, is by no means what it used to be, and the taste of first team football already at Old Trafford may convince him to continue working hard for a place in Mourinho’s side.
