Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 6.5 – Made a selection of routine saves and distributed the ball well. A largely trouble free afternoon.

Antonio Valencia 7 – Occasionally struggled with the pace of Nathan Redmond but positioned himself well on the whole and went forward with purpose.

Eric Bailly 7 – Battled valiantly with Shane Long and timed his headers well. Found himself in a couple of awkward positions in the second half but looked confident throughout.

Phil Jones 6.5 – Could have been more precise with his passes from the back but can be pleased with what was a dedicated, selfless display at the back.

Ashley Young 6.5 – Supplied a sumptuous cross for Romelu Lukaku’s goal in the first half and held the ball well, only to struggle when Southampton poured forward down his side during the latter stages.

Nemanja Matic 7 – Another accomplished, no-nonsense performance from the Serb. Held the ball with composure and purpose. Couldn’t replicate the same influence in the second half at times.

Marouane Fellaini 6.5 – Often found himself outpaced by the impressive Mario Lemina but once again made life difficult for his opponents, producing another unattractive yet effective display.

Juan Mata 6 – Produced a few nice touches early on but could never really muscle his way into the game. Taken off on the hour mark.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 7 – Looked menacing whenever the ball went to his feet. Pulled the strings for the visitors in a dominant first half and teed up Lukaku with a sensational chance later on.

Marcus Rashford 6.5 – Solid on the ball, full of energy and always reliable when it came to bring the ball up the pitch. Gave his all but could have been more clinical in the final third.

Romelu Lukaku 7 – The Belgian just cannot stop scoring. Overpowered both Wesley Hoedt and Fraser Forster with a super header in the second half. Eight goals from as many games.
