Jamie Redknapp has backed Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku to win the Premier League Golden Boot this season ahead of his rival forwards.
Lukaku has begun the season is sensational fashion, scoring eight goals in eight games in all competitions for Man United and six in six league games.
However, he’s not without company. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero have all been in brilliant form, too.
Agüero, Lukaku and Morata are all currently level on six goals, with Kane two behind on four goals.
Redknapp, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, said that “the Premier League is blessed with ambitious, ruthless forwards in Kane, Alvaro Morata, Sergio Agüero and Romelu Lukaku.”
Despite recognising the obvious qualities of Lukaku’s rivals, Redknapp went onto the write the following.
“For me, Lukaku looks the most likely to be crowned as top scorer come May.”
“In fact, he should have won it last year at Everton,” added the Sky Sports pundit.
“Until Kane’s end-of-season blitz, he was leading the way.
“He is central to this exciting, creative Manchester United team.
“With the abundance of chances served up for him, Lukaku should score even more.”
Lukaku has surprised even United fans with his early season form. He’s missed a couple of important chances, but has been utterly reliable for José Mourinho’s side with his clinical finishing.
The race for the Golden Boot should be a fascinating one this season. All the top teams, particularly the Manchester clubs, have begun the campaign scoring goals for fun. The strikers have headed that goalscoring form, and will continue to compete with each other until May.
