After Chelsea striker returned to former-club Atlético Madrid, Manchester United are more likely to pursue the Spanish club’s forward Antoine Griezmann for a second consecutive summer.
ESPN FC sources suggest the Reds will re-ignite their interest in Griezmann, who, at one point last summer, declared the chances of him signing for Man United were “six out of 10”.
Griezmann’s links to United ended after FIFA upheld Atleti’s transfer ban, resulting in a new contract for Griezmann who publicly said it would be “dirt move to leave now”.
Instead of joining United, Griezmann signed a new deal at Atleti, but ensured that his contract maintained the €100m release clause that United were prepared to trigger.
ESPN’s Mark Ogden suggests that figures at United were certain that the club’s interest in Griezmann had been “shelved rather than ended” after last summer’s debacle.
Griezmann, for his part, is said to remain interested in a move to United who he has flirted with for some time. David Beckham was the Frenchman’s idol as a young footballer and with the number seven shirt still available, it could be Griezmann filling at the end of next season.
In the current transfer market, with the best players in the world being transferred for 100s of millions rather than 10s, Griezmann could be a steal for United due to his €100m release clause.
