Nemanja Matic: Marouane Fellaini doesn’t receive the credit he deserves at Manchester United

Nemanja Matic has heaped praise on Marouane Fellaini following his brace during the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, noting that the Belgian doesn’t receive enough credit for his performances at Manchester United.

Fellaini has been an indispensable asset for Jose Mourinho ever since Paul Pogba’s injury against FC Basel last month and has four goals to his name – the same as Alexandre Lacazette – in total.

He was the driving force behind Man United’s stroll past Palace last Saturday, complimenting an imposing midfield display with two goals each side of half time.

And Matic, who partnered Fellaini in midfield during the game, was quick to point out just how valuable he was to the squad.

“If you see how he [Fella] works every day in the training, the games he played didn’t surprise me that he played well, that he scored goals,” he said.

“He doesn’t have the credit that he deserves. I don’t know why. But I really enjoy playing with him, and I am sure that we will continue like this.”

If Saturday’s domination of Palace affirmed anything, it’s this: that if you get the delivery into the box right then you can bank on that huge afro to reach it first.

He is, put simply, a menacing presence. Fellaini will rarely make a fool out of you like Anthony Martial, but he will more or less always overpower you.

And from an opponent’s point of view, that is quite crushing: knowing that, regardless of what you do on the ball, there will be times in a game where you are simply muscled out of the way.

Supporters are, you sense, beginning to appreciate this extremely rare – and valuable – dynamic offered by Fellaini this season.
