Paul Merson: David de Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world

by Marwan Harraz

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson was in high praise of Manchester United’s David de Gea in his column for the Daily Star.

De Gea, in recent seasons, has been the subject of a ‘tug-of-war’ between his club and Real Madrid as the Spanish team try every trick under the sun to lure their target over.

So far however, Jose Mourinho has managed to keep the goalkeeper at Old Trafford and if rumours are to be believed, David will renew his contract with the club.

While the Spanish goalkeeper may have previously wished to leave due to United’s transitional period, Mourinho’s arrival may have been enough to convince him to stay.

The club won the Europa League, League Cup and Community Shield under the Portuguese’s guidance and the players appear to be in the running for more silverware this season.

Either way, his talent is David De Geand Merson had this to say about the Spanish goalkeeper: “David De Gea is without doubt the best goalkeeper in the world right now. It’s not even close either. Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois are great keepers too but he’s making sensational saves week after week.

“If United win the title he will have been a big reason why…. He’s playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world too and that brings a huge amount of pressure but he handles it so well.”

Manchester United’s squad is filled to the brim with talented players but it’s clear to see that David de Gea is head and shoulders above the rest.

While Paul Pogba is the next big thing, the Spanish goalkeeper has proven himself consistently on the big stage while the Frenchman is yet to do so at the club.

Paul has started this season well but will need to earn the ‘world-class’ title just as de Gea did, playing at a high level for Manchester United over the years.

Just as David saves United points singlehandedly, Pogba will have to win them on his own as well to truly stand out as one of the best players in the world.
