Michael Owen believes Anthony Martial must play in this position

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has had his say on where Anthony Martial must play to bring out the best in the Frenchman.

Martial is capable of playing on either flank, although he’s better on the left, and has a preference to be a striker.

The pacy forward often featured on the left wing for his former club Monaco as the Ligue 1 side were blessed in the attacking department.

Since then he’s been shunned out wide for the Red Devils as well, only featuring occasionally under both Jose Mourinho and Louis Van Gaal as a striker.

Owen himself was a forward and at times was England’s first choice to lead the line during his playing days.

Speaking to BT Sport, Owen said: “I like him on the left. I’m not sure he is an intelligent enough runner to play central.

He needs to go into different channels and run in different lines. I think from the left he is really good.”

Leading the line in the modern game often means being outnumbered by two centre-backs and, as seen lately in the Premier League, occasionally three.

Forwards are now required to have excellent build up play, strength and height in order to bring in fellow teammates into the game.

While Martial has brilliant pace and dazzling feet, he doesn’t necessarily have the characteristics of a traditional Premier League striker.

Both Romelu Lukaku and even Harry Kane show the key attributes needed to lead a top club in modern football.

Pace and dribbling are often attributes of a winger. Either way, it all depends on how a manager prefers to utilise their players.

For Jose Mourinho, at least for now, he has Anthony as a left winger and since the Frenchman has excelled there, how can anyone complain?
