Claude Makelele has hailed Jose Mourinho’s signing of Nemanja Matic at Manchester United after the Serb’s excellent start to life at Old Trafford.
Matic joined the Reds in a surprise move for around £40million in the summer, with mnay expressing their shock that Chelsea would sell to a Premier League rival.
Makelele believes Matic has vastly improved Man United’s midfield, and more specifically helped Paul Pogba’s form improve.
“I think when Matic played with Kante, they had a good relationship,” Makelele said. “Like Kante does a job, Matic does a job.”
“I think Matic has made Manchester United on a good level. I think Mourinho, he’s done a very good job with Matic in this position.”
Though Pogba is now injured, ruled out potentially until mid-November with a hamstring injury suffered in United’s opening UEFA Champions League group game against FC Basel, the Frenchman had started the season in superb form.
Matic, says Makelele, has “given more potential for [Paul] Pogba to go forward and score more goals, make assists. I think it’s a good combination.”
He added: “Manchester United is very strong in midfield.”
This is the strongest midfield United have had in some years. With Pogba and Marouane Fellaini both ruled out for Saturday’s game against Liverpool, Jose Mourinho will be able to choose Matic and Ander Herrera, a strong duo.
Even under Sir Alex Ferguson, after the departure of Roy Keane, United severely lacked in midfield. The addition of Pogba last summer and Matic this summer has drastically changed things for the better.
