Liverpool vs Manchester United: Potential XI with Anthony Martial and Juan Mata

by Leo Nieboer

The international break, as always, has been a languid affair that has only served to give Jose Mourinho more selection headaches ahead of Saturday’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

Marouane Fellaini‘s knee ligament sprain, sustained on a poor surface in a literally meaningless World Cup qualifier, will keep him out for two weeks, while Romelu Lukaku and Michael Carrick are doubts.

Others, I’m sure, will be feeling the effects of long-distance arrangements over the last week (Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia spring to mind), amplifying the need for players free of afflictions and raring to go.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for the visit to Anfield with Anthony Martial and Juan Mata featuring on the flanks.

While midfield is starting to look like an error of concern, Mourinho can be quietly confident of the potential dynamic out wide.

Joe Gomez and Alberto Moreno look set to feature at full-back and the prospect of Martial, fresh from a week off, making darting diagonal runs past the former is tantalising to say the very least, while Mata – who knows all about stamping his authority on this game – could cause Moreno, mainly despised by his own supporters, plenty of problems if he can link up with Mkhitaryan and bring Valencia into the game.
