Jose Mourinho desperate to sign Sergi Roberto from Barcelona next summer – report

Jose Mourinho has urged the club to make a £36m bid for Barcelona factotum Sergi Roberto over the summer, according to reports from Spain.

The Catalan midfielder enjoyed his finest season yet in a Barcelona shirt last year under Luis Enrique, impressing primarily at right back whilst also featuring in midfield and out wide, prompting Manchester United to contemplate activating his £36m release clause.

But new boss Ernesto Valverde, along with Roberto himself, made it clear that no such move away from the Nou Camp would happen amid interest from several Premier League clubs.

And according to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, the 54-year-old has once again urged the club activate Roberto’s release clause ahead of a possible January move.

It was perhaps slightly ironic that the person who scored that earth-shattering winning goal against Paris Saint Germain – sealing one of the best comebacks in the history of sport – was indeed Roberto, a player who avoids the limelight by his very nature.

He is not the master of one role but rather a jack of all trades, always there to provide a stable, composed performance when needed.

And with United’s options in midfield currently wearing thin, alongside Antonio Valencia‘s inability to play every game, you can see why the idea of signing Roberto appeals to Mourinho.
