Danny Murphy backs Romelu Lukaku to become a “phenomenal” striker at Manchester United

Danny Murphy has backed Romelu Lukaku to be a ‘phenomenal’ goalscorer after a wonderful start to life at Manchester United.

Lukaku signed from Everton for an initial £75m in a surprise summer transfer, and has scored 11 goals in his first 11 games for the club.

He’s quickly won over any doubters at United, having one of the best starts for a striker at Old Trafford in decades.

Murphy, a pundit on Sky Sports’ The Debate, said: “He is starting to think he can be the best. His fitness is a big thing too.”

“He could be phenomenal. He could really go on to be something special.”

Lukaku is just 24, and has more experience at football’s elite level than many players senior do. This is his first season playing UEFA Champions League football, having never played in the competition for Chelsea, and he’s started in fine fashion: three goals in two games.

He’s improving at United as an all-round player, having gone from an exciting talent to a reliable striker at Everton.

At 24, he’s one of Europe’s best for his age, and he’ll continue to get better. With improved service, having Paul Pogba playing behind him once the Frenchman comes back, and the young Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford on the left, Lukaku’s goalscoring will continue.

Whether he’ll be one of the best in the world will take some time to see, because he’s not yet on a level with Harry Kane in the Premier League or Europe’s other top strikers, Luis Suarez and Robert Lewandowski.

Yet he is consistent and free-scoring, United fans can only be excited about his future.
