Jose Mourinho refuses to provide Manchester United injury update ahead of Benfica clash

Jose Mourinho has refused to provide an injury update ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Benfica aside from noting that his side us currently beleaguered with “so many injuries”.

Both Eric Bailly and Marouane Fellaini were injured over the international break, suffering knocks to the groin and knee respectively, and haven’t travelled with the squad to Lisbon.

Marcos Rojo was part of the touring party, although he remains injured alongside Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick.

And Mourinho, speaking ahead of the clash with Benfica, refused to discuss whether any of his injured players were close to a return.

“I will not tell you the team,” he said. “With so many injuries, you can predict with an almost guarantee of success because we have so few options. It is easy for you to guess.”

We have to remember that Mourinho is most likely including both Antonio Valencia and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the list of players ruled out to start given the former’s one-game-a-week limit and the latter’s recent travails with the Armenia national side.

And so, as the man himself points out, we are left with, well, not much at all. But the lack of regular options hands the boss an opportunity to give starts to Juan Mata, Victor Lindelof and possibly Jesse Lingard, while Axel Tuanzebe may receive a chance to impress in midfield later in the game.
